Citizen Science Informational Zoom! For Adults-Teens-Kids

April is Citizen Science Month at the Waldport Public Library! 

Science activities for all ages during the month of April.

Listen to a zoom informational meeting on how you can participate to help accelerate research and discovery, from astronomy to zoology. Contact the Waldport Public Library at the for the Zoom registration. 

The Waldport Public Library is happy to announce that April is Citizen Science Month! The Waldport Public Library was one of 15 libraries nationwide to receive a Citizen Science Month Mini-Grant. This opportunity is possible through a mini-grant the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), a program of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and the All of Us Research Program. NNLM supports SciStarter and Arizona State University through Citizen Science Month is making it possible to bring health programming to the Waldport Public Library and our community.

Starting on April 1, the library is hosting and facilitating a month-long celebration of all things Citizen Science and through local partnering with science-minded organizations.

On April 5, at 5:30 p.m. through the Waldport Public Library families, kids teens and adults will have the opportunity to ZOOM with Citizen Science to learn more about NLM All of Us Research and about Citizen Science/ to learn how to research online, navigate scistarter, and learn how to keep track of volunteer time. There will be time for questions and answers, too.  This is a great opportunity for teens in particular from fifth grade through high school to find ways to have volunteer hours in real science research projects around the world! According to Citizen Science  . . .”whether you're at home or able to come to the library, adults, teens, families, kids can participate virtually in Citizen Science Month.  ZOOM meetings, YouTube videos, Science Take & Makes, partnering opportunities, and NLM All of Us Research Program/Citizen Science/scistarter app opportunities to research will be available throughout the month.  Come by the Waldport Public Library and pick up your guide or follow events at or Waldport Public Library Facebook. To sign up message the Waldport Public Library at Oregon and Coastal Partners include the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Sun River Nature Center & Observatory, Oregon Coast Community College Aquarium Program, HMSC Oregon State Marine Science Day, the Bureau of Land Management Yaquina Head, the Tillamook Oregon Coast Visitors Association (birding), and SOLVE Oregon Spring Clean Up/Earth Beach Clean Up.

Here are seven ways to join online science projects — or even host your own Citizen Science Month event.

  1. You can find and join an online project with the SciStarter Project Finder.
  2. Invite people to meet-up virtually via Facebook Live, Skype, Zoom, Google Hangout, etc., and go through the Introduction to Citizen Science Tutorial. 
  3. Create a virtual team and invite others to join and play Stall Catchers, an online game to accelerate research on Alzheimer’s Disease. Or, encourage people to go to org/NLMto find projects to do from home!
  4. Organize an online book club to read and discuss books from this Citizen Science Booklistfeaturing a brand new book, “The Field Guide to Citizen Science,” from Timber Press. (You can even invite the authors to join your online discussion.)
  5. Host an online Watch Party to view PBS shows about citizen science or watch citizen science “How to” videos on YouTube.
  6. Find and join an existing online event at org/events(select “Online Only”).
  7. Post these social media promptsto your email list or social media followers and invite them to view archived webinars; or, poll participants about their interests in citizen science, plan a follow-up project, or share projects.
